Environmental Technology Verification of a Biofilm Process for High Efficiency Nitrogen Removal From Wastewater

Several potential clients have asked Krüger Kaldnes if the moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) process has been through Environmental Technology Verification (ETV).

This prompted Krüger Kaldnes to use the combined denitrification MBBR process as a pilot case in the Nordic ETV project (NOWATECH).

Full-scale testing demonstrated that the combined denitrification MBBR process can easily remove 90 % of total N at reasonable operating costs. The average air supply to aerobic reactors was 0.80 Nm3/m3 reactor volume·h, corresponding to an energy demand of 32 W/m3 reactor volume.

Median effluent concentrations of 2.9 mg total N/L and 1.5 mg total inorganic N/L were achieved. All vendor claims were verified.
